The Italian Merchant Marine Academy was recognized as a foundation in January 2011, under the name: “Foundation for the Higher Technical Institute for Sustainable Mobility – Maritime Transport and Fisheries Sectors.”
The purpose of the Foundation, which is supported by the leading entities in the national maritime cluster, is to provide training for senior maritime transport professionals (particularly officers) and to promote research and educational innovation in the sector.
quality
The Academy works in close collaboration with the National Maritime Fund and the Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research (MIUR) to train officer cadets. The Academy receives funding for the training of officer cadets, largely from the National Maritime Fund—resources derived from contributions made by shipping companies and lines under the “tonnage tax” regulations—as well as from the Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research (MIUR) and the Liguria Region. The Academy also carries out other activities to support businesses in the maritime cluster, in the fields of training, design, studies, and research, with both public and private funding. In 2008, the Academy’s International Section was launched through IMSSEA (International Maritime, Safety, Security & Environment Academy), pursuant to an agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IMO in London.
The Quality Policy of the Italian Merchant Marine Academy, consistent with the Mission Statement, reflects the Administration’s commitment to achieving specific educational objectives: advanced education and training for maritime personnel on board and ashore; continuing education and training for managerial and operational staff within the maritime sector; and the provision of initial training, continuing education, and the adaptation of non-nautical academic credentials to maritime disciplines.
- commitments (as set forth in the minutes of the management review) that must be fulfilled by management;
- Meeting the needs of customers and users through the timely provision of high-quality services that comply with legal requirements.
- the Academy’s commitment to quality, ensuring that all staff understand what the customer/user wants and participate in maintaining and improving the Quality Management System.
- The Academy’s commitment to preventing administrative violations by its employees and collaborators through the implementation of an appropriate Organizational Model, the dissemination of the Code of Ethics/Code of Conduct to the intended recipients, and the oversight of its application by an independent, autonomous, reputable, and professional Supervisory Body.
- employee satisfaction, achieved through the continuous improvement of their specialized knowledge and work methods, with the training necessary to perform their duties and implement the Quality Program.
- Respect for users, through responsible behavior that prioritizes safety, workplace hygiene, and environmental protection.
The Academy is committed to achieving real improvements in business quality:
- by reducingboththe number of annual complaintsfrom customers/usersand the number of nonconformities through the implementation of appropriate corrective and preventive actions,
- by assessing customer/user satisfaction.
To this end, the Academy’s administration is committed to ensuring that this policy is understood, implemented, and supported by all staff at every level. The administration commits to reviewing the Academy’s Quality Policy annually to reaffirm or update it as needed.

We believe that maritime transport—as regulated by international standards and guided by an international vision—along with other crucial sectors such as logistics, rail transport, shipbuilding, and maritime tourism, are key sectors for ensuring the sharing and exchange of wealth, thereby guaranteeing widespread well-being.
With this in mind, they recognize the decisive role of flight and ground crew at all levels, as well as the crucial importance of safety, competence, effectiveness, and efficiency in all aspects of transportation management. These elements can be established, consolidated, and developed through training and education of the highest quality, which serves first and foremost to ensure the safety of crews, workers (both onboard and on the ground), passengers, and cargo, and which contributes to economic and social development, with a priority also placed on environmental protection.
The Foundation’s aspiration is to operate in constant compliance with international regulations, with the goal of becoming the leading point of reference at the national level and a highly authoritative entity at the international level, pursuing its customary cutting-edge approach to addressing and overcoming innovation challenges posed by technological advancements or regulatory changes, without ruling out the possibility of entering new areas of activity in which to excel, always within the maritime, logistics, rail, shipbuilding, tourism, and any other relevant sectors. All of this is achieved with a rigorous focus on continuous improvement and with the pride of being an active part of our country’s maritime history.
The organization’s values are the ethical principles applicable to providers of education and training services, while the specific values, as set forth in the Code of Ethics required by National law, are: honesty, impartiality, integrity, confidentiality, fairness, and transparency.
