COURSE OBJECTIVE:
The goal of the program is to expand the opportunity for young people who do not hold a nautical diploma but are interested in pursuing a career as an officer aboard ships to earn the title of Deck Officer Cadet, thereby aligning with the European Union’s stated objective of encouraging young people to pursue such careers.
With regard to the training objectives, these are to be determined in accordance with the program published as an attachment to the MIT Decree of December 19, 2016, as amended and supplemented.
PROFESSIONAL ROLE:
The Deck Officer Trainee assists navigation officers in performing the duties assigned to them aboard ships with a gross tonnage of 500 GT or more.
The qualification obtained upon completion of the training courses, as established by the MIT Decree of December 19, 2016, as amended, opens the door to a career in the deck department without any restrictions whatsoever.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
The course is open to students of either gender who are at least 18 years of age and meet the following requirements:
• High school diploma or IeFP+IFTS diploma (five-year program)
Note: Candidates who obtained the required academic qualification abroad must provide a certificate of equivalence (issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of origin) in accordance with current legislation (Law No. 148 of July 11, 2002, as amended).
• First-class seafarer registration certificate with the qualification of deckhand.
Note: Those who do not possess this document by the deadline specified in this notice may regularize their status by the end of the training program.
• Valid certificate of the biennial medical examination

• Good knowledge of the Italian language (no certification required, but the course will be taught primarily in Italian, and exams will be in Italian, with the exception of the English language exams).
• Good knowledge of the English language (no certification required, but technical English as applied to navigation will be covered during the course and will be included in the final exam).
COSTS
The cost per person is:
– €1,600 (VAT-exempt), excluding room and board, for a minimum of 20 enrolled students and with a contribution from the National Seafarers’ Fund
Payment of the full amount of €1,600 must be made no later than January 17, 2027.
In the event that the minimum number of 20 enrolled students is not reached and/or the grant from the National Seafarers’ Fund is not disbursed, the cost per person for the course will be:
– €5,000 (VAT-exempt), excluding room and board, for a minimum of 20 enrolled students.
A payment of €2,500 must be made no later than January 17, 2027. The remaining balance must be paid no later than February 1, 2027, the course start date.
If the minimum number of 20 participants is not reached and the course does not take place, the registration fee will be refunded.
Please note: If the required documentation is not submitted by the specified deadline (course start date: February 1, 2027), the participation fee paid will not be refunded.
COURSE DURATION AND LOCATION
The course lasts 700 hours (pursuant to D.MIT. of December 19, 2016, as amended and supplemented, as authorized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation, General Command of the Port Authority Corps, by Decree No. 792 of October 20, 2017).
Classes will be held at the headquarters of the Fondazione Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile, located at Via Oderico 10, 16145 Genoa, or at affiliated facilities, depending on the curriculum.
